How to tailor your resume to a job description
A repeatable 6-step method to tailor a resume to any job description in 15 minutes: pull the keywords, reorder your proof, rewrite the top third, and check the match score.
Check your JD match scoreQuick steps
- Highlight the JD's must-haves. Hard skills, tools, years and qualifications that repeat or appear under 'requirements'.
- Map each must-have to proof. A bullet, project or role that shows it.
- Rewrite your summary for this role. Two lines using the JD's job title and top skills.
- Reorder bullets. Move the most relevant bullet to the top of each role.
- Use their words. Rename skills to match the JD's terms where true.
- Check the match. Paste the JD into JD Match and fill real gaps.
Why tailoring works
Recruiters search their ATS using the words from their own job description, then skim the top third of each resume. A tailored resume shows up in that search and confirms the fit in the first few seconds. A generic one may be just as qualified and still not get read.
How much should you change per application?
Keep one master resume with every bullet you have ever written. For each application, change the summary, the order of bullets and projects, and the skills wording. You should not need to invent anything; if the JD's core requirement is nowhere in your history, the role may not be the right one.
A worked example
JD: 'Data Analyst — SQL, Power BI, stakeholder reporting, A/B testing.' Original bullet: 'Made dashboards for the sales team.' Tailored: 'Built 6 Power BI dashboards on SQL views for the sales leadership weekly review; replaced 20 manual reports.' Same work, now in the JD's language with scale and outcome.
Frequently asked questions
Is tailoring a resume to every job worth it?
For jobs you really want, yes. 15 minutes of tailoring usually beats sending 15 generic applications.
What is a good JD match score?
Cover every must-have skill you genuinely have. A higher score from keywords you cannot back up hurts in interviews.
Can AI tailor my resume?
