How to check if your resume is ATS-friendly
Three ways to test whether an applicant tracking system can read your resume, from a 30-second copy-paste test to a full parse check, free and without uploading your file.
Check your resume with ATS X-RayQuick steps
- Open your resume PDF. Use the exact file you send to employers.
- Run it through ATS X-Ray. It extracts the text the way a parser does, inside your browser.
- Read the text stream top to bottom. Check that sections, dates and bullets come out in order.
- Fix every failed check. Columns, garbled characters, missing links, missing sections.
- Export again and re-test. Repeat until every check passes.
The 30-second copy-paste test
Open your PDF, select all (Ctrl+A or Cmd+A), copy and paste into a plain text editor like Notepad. If the text comes out in a sensible order, with your name first and each job's title, company and dates together, a parser will probably read it. If lines from two columns interleave, or symbols appear instead of your phone and email icons, it will not.
What to look for in the extracted text
- Reading order: does each section appear whole, in order?
- Characters: are there boxes, question marks or odd symbols where icons or special fonts were?
- Bullets: does each bullet stay a separate line, or do they merge?
- Links: do your LinkedIn and GitHub URLs appear as text?
- Dates: are they next to the right job?
- Sections: are Experience, Education and Skills found by name?
Why we built a check that never uploads your file
Many ATS checkers ask you to upload your resume and sign up to see a score. A resume holds your phone number, email and work history. ResumeSutra's ATS X-Ray parses the PDF locally with the same kind of text extraction parsers use, so the file never leaves your device.
Frequently asked questions
Can I check ATS compatibility for free?
Yes. ATS X-Ray is free, needs no sign-up and runs in your browser.
Why does my resume show garbled text?
Usually because of icon fonts or decorative fonts embedded without a character map. Replace icons with plain text labels like 'Email:'.
Do I need a 100% ATS score?
No single score is universal. Aim for clean extraction and coverage of the job's key skills.
